Joan Jett to Receive Clio Music Lifetime Achievement Award

JOAN JETT TO RECEIVE CLIO MUSIC LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD

Rock Legend to Perform at the 60th Annual Clio Awards in New York City on September 25

NEW YORK—(September 11, 2019)— Clio Music, the global competition celebrating the visceral power of music to connect consumers and brands around the world, today announced that innovator and creative visionary Joan Jett will be the recipient of the 2019 Clio Music Lifetime Achievement Award. The honor will be marked by a rare acoustic performance by the rock legend. Clio Music, sponsored for the fifth year by Citi, will recognize Jett in addition to the year’s Grand Clio Music winners as part of the 60th annual Clio Awards at the Manhattan Center in New York City on September 25.

As the leader of the hard-rocking Blackhearts, with whom she has become a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, Jett has had eight platinum and gold albums and nine Top 40 singles, including the classics "Bad Reputation," "I Love Rock 'N' Roll" and "Crimson and Clover." Proving the level at which an indie artist can have mass appeal, a version of Jett’s "I Hate Myself for Loving You" was re-imagined for the NBC Sunday Night Football theme from 2006-2015 and was re-recorded by Joan Jett and The Blackhearts with Carrie Underwood for the 2019 football season. Jett has also found commercial success, quite literally, in spots for Nike, Target, Volkswagen and Hyundai.

Her independent record label, Blackheart, was founded in 1980 after she was rejected by no less than 23 labels. Blackheart is one of the longest running indie labels and continues to give voice to new bands. As a producer, she has overseen albums by artists like Bikini Kill and Circus Lupus. On stage, Joan Jett and the Blackhearts continue touring the globe alongside fellow rock icons like Green Day and the Foo Fighters to this day. Jett’s life story has been an inspiration for movie audiences as well, as told in the feature film “The Runaways” starring Kristen Stewart and “Bad Reputation,” a documentary about Jett's life that premiered to critical acclaim at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival.

“I recently came across the documentary about Joan Jett’s life and career and was blown away by her creative impact,” said Nicole Purcell, President, Clio. “She is a woman who blazed her own trail in so many aspects of her life, whether it be popularizing a new sound or creating opportunities for herself where none existed. For me, her most impactful achievement is in the way that she has given back to the next generation of women in rock 'n' roll and used her stardom as a platform to champion women’s, LGBTQ and animal rights.”
